Musselshell County Montana Schools

This office is now a combined office with the County Treasurer, so when you call you can let the person answering the phone know what you need.  They may be able to assist you, if not, they will transfer the call.

Office Duties

This office handles school county wide fiscal duties, assists with district fiscal issues, pupil transportation, Home School, School Elections, Truancy, permanent records, Educator Licensure Registration, school law and school controversies as stipulated in Montana Code and Administrative Rule of Montana that deal with K-12 Education in Musselshell County.  I am not a certified educator, so any situations that arise that need a certified County Superintendent of Schools will have to be contracted out.

This office works with: Montana Association of School Business Officials, Department of Revenue, School Administrators of Montana, Central and South Central Montana Administrators, Montana Association of County School Superintendents, Central Montana Learning Resource Center Coop, County Commissioners, Law Enforcement, County Attorney, Clerk and Recorder, and Treasurer

Budget Process

This office addresses taxpayer concern by working with school districts and the County Commissioners to establish K-12 District and County Wide Levies with Taxpayer Liability in mind, annually.

Elections

School Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May except in cases of an unforeseen emergency or legislative year allowances. Trustee Candidates must be residents of the District they wish to run for a position.

Home School Registration

A notice is published in the fall for new schools and a mailing is sent out to prior notified home schools. During the rest of the year, new home schools in the County need to contact this office by phone or mail for registration/information.

Truancy

A truant student is one that is persistent in nonattendance without excuse for all or part of a school day. It is the parent’s responsibility to see that their child attends school. If truancy becomes an issue, this office, in conjunction with local schools, state agencies, the County Attorney and law enforcement work with families to place students in the environment that will allow them to complete their education.

Attendance Agreements

Attendance Agreements are required for a student to attend a school district outside their resident district.  This is noticed each spring with the transportation notice. Agreements are reviewed at the Summer Transportation Meeting.  However, Attendance Agreements may be processed throughout the year.

Transportation Contracts

A notice is published each spring. Eligible students must live a minimum of at least 3 miles from the nearest bus stop.  For those currently under contract, local schools send out contracts if returning that fall.  For new contracts, contact the County Superintendent of Schools Office for information on which District to apply. Contracts for late arrivals to districts may be submitted after school commences to apply for contingency funding that is limited.

County Transportation Committee

Meets in the summer to establish school district bus routes and to approve individual transportation contracts. Additional meetings are called periodically during the year if routes need adjusted. The committee must have 5 members, so our committee consists of one Musselshell County Commissioner, a representative from each School District, one individual selected by the County Superintendent and the County Superintendent of Schools as the chair.

Educator License/Certificate Registration

Educators have 60 calendar days from the beginning of school to register their license, which may be mailed in or brought in.  The original license is returned to the Educator with a copy for the District Business Official and a copy is retained for the County Superintendent of Schools Office. Anyone in the Treasurer’s office can assist you with this.
