Wier Building Revitalization Update

by Theresa Doumitt

Roundup, Montana – Musselshell County offers this article as another update to the community regarding the Wier Building Revitalization project.  The project is a collaborative and innovative effort to address Roundup’s workforce housing and retail service needs while intentionally preserving an important piece of our cultural heritage.

The County’s scope of work includes the repair of the structural issue in the southwest corner, clean-up of the hazardous materials, and installation of a new roof.  Once the building is stabilized and “clean”, an intentional developer will be chosen through a Request for Proposal process to own the building and complete the full renovations.  Development proposals for renovation and use will be presented to the County by June 1st.

Since our February update, the County has been working with our collaborative design team (architect, structural engineer, and construction contractor) to develop a built-in-place, structurally engineered shoring plan for the issue in the southwest corner.  The County is currently taking steps to launch the construction phase of the Building Stabilization Plan developed by this team.

On May 6th, the project’s Abatement Contractor started their work to remove the asbestos and flaking lead-based paint from the building.  As part of this clean-up, the items left in the building are being cleared out as they were deemed contaminated with lead or asbestos dust by the industrial hygienist.  So, if you have noticed workers in the building, this is the work they are undertaking.  Some curious folks have been caught trespassing, which is illegal and dangerous.  Therefore, for your safety and the safety of our workers, PLEASE do not cross the construction barriers or enter the building!

The County’s funds committed to the project will be sourced from the Federal Mineral Royalties funds and NO MILLED TAX DOLLARS will be used for this project.  For more information on the use and source of the Federal Mineral Royalties funds, please see:  https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-30/chapter-XII/subchapter-A/part-1202

All project discussions and decisions have been documented in the recordings available on the County website or YouTube page.
